Jules Delépierre was born in Armentières in 1820 and was a violinist, xylophonist, and composer, possibly even an instrument maker. He performed throughout Europe with his children, who were considered child prodigies on the violin and xylophone. In 1862, he was awarded the honorary medal "Ingenio et arti" by the Danish king; it is likely that the inhabitants of his hometown presented him with the gold medal in question at that time.
